Not every damaged opening should be boarded. Reinforced tarp and shrink-wrap closures let light into the building, avoid additional fastener penetrations in historic or finished surfaces, and can be installed on openings where structural panels are impractical. They are the right answer for storm-damaged glazing, openings awaiting custom replacement units, and elevations where appearance and daylight still matter during a long reconstruction.
We use reinforced poly sheeting and, where conditions call for it, heat-shrunk containment film applied over a fastened frame so the closure is drum-tight rather than loose. Perimeters are sealed to the substrate with the appropriate tape and batten system to keep wind-driven rain out, and the assembly is detailed to shed water downward and outward. Where an opening must remain operable, we build a sealed access panel into the closure.
Closures are inspected after significant weather and maintained throughout the project, then removed as replacement windows and doors are installed during reconstruction. All work is photographed and documented with materials, opening dimensions and labor for the insurance file, since emergency covering of damaged openings is a standard recoverable mitigation cost under most policies. Because the interior stays dry and secure, extraction, drying and reconstruction inside the building proceed on schedule regardless of what the weather does, and the loss stops growing while the permanent units are on order.
