Raw sewage is grossly contaminated Category three water carrying bacteria, viruses, protozoa, parasites and endotoxins, including E. coli, Salmonella, Hepatitis A, Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Anything porous it touches is unsalvageable, and the affected area must be treated as contaminated until testing proves otherwise. Contamination also spreads well beyond the visible water line, wicking up drywall, tracking under flooring and aerosolizing into the air of adjacent rooms, which is why the remediation footprint is almost always larger than the wet footprint. There is no shortcut version of this work that is safe.
Under full containment and negative air, we remove and dispose of all contaminated porous materials, typically carpet and pad, drywall to a defined height above the water line, insulation, particleboard and MDF cabinetry, affected subfloor and contents. Semi-porous and non-porous surfaces including framing, concrete, tile and metal are cleaned through gross removal, detailed cleaning with appropriate agents and mechanical action, and then treated with an EPA-registered hospital-grade disinfectant at the required concentration and dwell time. Structural drying follows, monitored daily to dry standard.
Before reconstruction we deodorize the affected space to remove residual sewage odor from framing and subfloor, and verify decontamination by inspection and bacterial sampling where the protocol calls for it. Reconstruction returns the space to pre-loss condition. You receive the complete file: protocol, materials removed, disinfection records, drying documentation, verification results and disposal manifests, all formatted to support the insurance claim.
