Thermal fogging works on a simple principle: smoke penetrated the building as a heated, expanded aerosol, so the deodorizing agent has to travel the same way to reach the same places. A thermal fogger heats a solvent-based deodorizer into a dense fog of extremely fine particles that behave like the original smoke, migrating into wall cavities, under cabinets, behind trim, into upholstery and through porous materials that surface cleaning and ambient air treatment cannot reach.
Fogging is performed in an unoccupied, sealed structure after cleaning is complete, because fogging over unremoved soot only masks the problem temporarily. We remove or protect items that should not be exposed, shut down and isolate the HVAC system unless the ductwork is intentionally being treated, and calculate the agent volume against the cubic footage of the space. The building is then held sealed for the required dwell time so the fog can pair with and neutralize odor molecules, followed by a controlled ventilation and air scrubbing period before reoccupancy.
Thermal fogging is one tool inside a deodorization plan, used most often on fire and smoke losses and on severe protein odor from kitchen fires. It is typically combined with source removal, structural cleaning, hydroxyl or ozone treatment and sealing of framing. All safety requirements including occupancy restrictions, fire safety precautions and reentry timelines are followed and documented, and results are verified after the building is closed and warmed.
